This movie greatly resembles the plot-line to "Shutter Island". The whole movie is a dream that a man in an asylum is having. The sets are fantasical, with painted shadows and odd angles.
"When the shadows lay darkest" - A great example of the bizzare descriptions in this movie.
It begins with a man telling a story to a random stranger about "Dr. Caligari", a strange man who visits a small town, around the time murders start occurring. And this is where the movie begins, during a fair and a "monster" is released. There are several murders that take place, and the tale raps up when they catch the "real monster" Dr. Caligari, and throw him into a asylum. In a huge plot twist at the end, it turns out that the man who is describing the story is actually in the institute and has fabricated this story to dramatize his everyday life. Other patients are revealed to be the characters in his story.
